Stellenbosch has the perfect climate for wine, with Blaauwklippen Estate lying at the very heart of this winemaking paradise. Over the course of centuries the surrounding granite cliffs have been eroded by sun, wind and rain, producing our most valuable asset: the abundant mineral-rich soil in which we plant our vineyards. The grey-blue rock and stone of the cliffs, our farm’s namesake, are particularly well suited to storing the sun’s warmth, creating the ideal climate for producing exceptional wines.
Blaauwklippen Vineyards, under the guidance and leadership of MD and Winemaker Rolf Zeitvogel, take a holistic, bio-conscious and bio-sensible approach to farming, trying to stay as close to nature as possible, while implementing modern farming techniques and practices to achieve their goals. From composting bio-mass to generating solar power, the entire farm is geared towards producing wonderful wines.
One of the most recent products of this care and attention towards winemaking is the Blaauwklippen Cultivar Selection Shiraz 2014. The grapes were handpicked and transported to the cellar for immediate processing. Wild fermentation started in stainless steel tanks after two days of cold maceration. After fermentation, the wine was aged in 4500 litre oak vats and small oak barrels/casks for 2 years.
The wine has a nose of mulberry fruit with sweet Christmas spice and savoury meat notes, combined with hints of dark chocolate. Grippy tannins combine with medium intensity and texture on the palate. A true South African red, this Shiraz complements any meat coming off the braai, as well as Cape Malay dishes like Bobotie.
Blaauwklippen Vineyards live according to the principle that the winemaker merely finishes what nature began. This not only leads to more natural, flavoursome products, but reduces their carbon footprint, to leave a better, cleaner world for future generations. Creating wines that will truly stand the test of time.
