Newsletter July 2012

We are in the middle of another gripping Cape Winter and my favourite way to stay warm is sipping on our new release 10 year old Potstilled Brandy, no more brrrr after tasting this little number and that is a Rolf Zeitvogel guarantee!

The Brandy was made from Colombard, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc wines and has been double distilled in an old Copper potstill which was originally used at Oude Molen in Stellenbosch.

The Brandy was matured in selected 225l French oak barrels for 10 years here in the heart of Blaauwklippen’s cellar and sells for R360 per bottle.

Zinsational results at the San Francisco International Wine Competition

We are widely regarded as the South-African market leader when it comes to the production of Zinfandel, a grape varietal that enjoys immense popularity in the USA.  At the 2012 San Francisco International Wine Competition this was confirmed, as we clinched a Gold Medal for the Blaauwklippen Vineyards 2010 Noble Late Harvest and a silver medal for the Blaauwklippen Vineyards 2008 Zinfandel. More than 4 500 wines were judged the most yet in the 32-year history of this competition.

The Blaauwklippen Zinfandel portfolio includes three products: A classic, sophisticated red wine, a noble late harvest and a white Zinfandel that made history in 2007 by becoming the first white style Zinfandel in South Africa. If you have not tasted them yet, come and visit so that we can introduce you to the wonders fo Zinfandel.

Nice to meet you!

Chantel Lewis is our new Wine Centre Manager and was born and bred in the winelands.

Chantel was instrumental in establishing some of the best known wine tourism destinations in South Africa and we are very happy that she now calls Blaauwklippen “home”. In her free time our resident song bird performs with a jazz quartet and enjoys fun times with friends and family. Welcome!

From the market

We have an exciting market month planned; our ingredient for our “Seasonal Ingredient Day” on the 8th of July will be Guavas. All the food traders will incorporate this delicious fruit in at least one food item on their menu. So expect delicious combinations with this sweet fruit.

We will host the Helderberg Animal Welfare Society on the15th for our monthly Vineyards doggy walk again. Bring your best friend along for a relaxed stroll through the picturesque vineyards of Blaauwklippen and help to raise some funds for a worthy charity. The entry fee to the walk is R20 per person and dog or R10 per person only.

Join us on the 22nd for our first “Christmas in July”.  This promise to be a day filled with tastes and experiences that you would not necessarily get in December when it is hot.

In the spirit of the Olympic Games that starts on 27 July, we will host a “Blaauwklippen Olympics” on the 29th. This concept will involve families to enter as a team and compete in a variety of different activities.

Until next time,

Rolf Zeitvogel and the Blaauwklippen Team
