Happy Mother’s May!

It is said that a mother is a person who can take the place of all others, but whose place no one else can take. How true! That is why we declared May “Mother’s Day Month” at Blaauwklippen.


Visit our Wine Centre and enter the Mother’s Day Competition by filling in the entry form during the month of May. You stand a chance to win a bottle of our Before & After as well as a three course Zinfandel inspired lunch for two. The value of the prize is R805 and the winner will be announced in our next newsletter and on twitter and Facebook. The Mother’s Day lunch on the 13th of May is no less than a feast:

To start, balsamic roasted beetroot soup served with feta cream and fresh cracked black pepper followed by leg of lamb served on garlic fondant potatoes with minted broccoli purée and red wine jus or Linefish set on toasted corn fritter tomato & basil coulis with a herb battered prawn. Of course no meal is complete without something sweet, and the White chocolate tart with B&A poached pear and almond brittle should definitely hit the sweet spot! The Barouche restaurant has switched to Winter trading hours, and will be closed on Monday and Tuesday until August (i.e. reopen from 1 August).

They will introduce their new Winter menu next week, featuring roosterkoek, served with olive jam, chicken liver pate and garlic & thyme cream cheese, double baked blue cheese soufflé as well as delicious soups that will change daily.

Look forward to oxtail confit, braised lamb shoulder bobotie, Chicken & wild mushroom pie with garden vegetables & potato purée and many more palate pleasers.

Since the wet season is approaching, the market will move into a shed behind the Wine Centre on rainy days. This means that you will still be able to find your favourite goodies every week at the market, even if the weather is poor.

May is packed with exciting themes and events.

Be sure to join us on the 6th of May for an Autumn Craft Beer Festival, where some of the top local craft breweries will be introducing their brews to you.

Spoil your mother, wife or grandmother at our Mother’s Day Market on 13th May. Some deliciously prepared foods will be on offer as well as a selection of arts and crafts. Musician, Harry Curtis, will be entertaining us with hits from yesteryear, which is sure to be a treat for any mother regardless of age. Since it is the second Sunday of the month, it is also our Seasonal Ingredient Day. For the next two months we will be celebrating the goodness of citrus, loaded with vitamin C, of course, and therefore great to keep the colds and flu at bay. The ingredient for May is Lemon and Lime. Expect all kinds of delicious food fusions with these healthy fruits.

On Sunday, 20th May, we will welcome the Helderberg Animal Welfare Society again for our monthly Vineyard Doggy Walk. Besides raising funds for this charity, much good has come from this event in the form of adoptions of stray animals. The fee is R20 per person and dog or R10 per person only for the walk.

Join us on 27th May, when we will be going back in time at our Vintage Day. Browse through interesting selection of antiques and collectables, vintage clothing and classic cars.


Our featured traders for the month of May are Brenda and Jacky from the Dragon Fly farm with their Alpine Goat’s cheese. Either Brenda or Jacky drives all the way from Napier every Sunday with their excellent range of goat’s cheese.

The herb and olive oil or the wasabi infused cheese come highly recommended. They have a great love for their goats which are treated as royalty on the farm. This is evident when you taste the cheese that is made from their milk.

They do stop producing when the goat’s have their kids as it is more important to feed the young ones with the milk than produce cheese.
