The season is changing

What I love most about my position as a winemaker is that I am so acutely aware of how the seasons change, as seasons influence vintages. Autumn is here and all the grapes are fermenting in the cellar. We give thanks for a successful harvest.
Saving Power

“Earth Hour” was celebrated internationally on the 23rd of March and energy saving is something that we take very seriously.

We teamed up with Soventix South Africa (Pty) Ltd who took care of the installation of the Blaauwklippen solar plant.

The internationally renowned solar project developer constructed this project within just 7 days. The system will produce nearly 6,800 kWh of power each year for the next 20 to 30 years.

When taking the rapidly rising electricity prices into account, a photovoltaic (PV) system creates a certain degree of independency from the public power provider and a huge reduction in energy costs.

Rowan Jacklin, General Manager of Soventix South Africa, explains:

“Even this rather small system already has tremendous positive effects on nature. It avoids the emission of nearly 7 tons of CO2 every single year, which is not only important from an environmental perspective, but also on reducing the future carbon tax that will be imposed South Africa is blessed with many hours of sunshine so the potential yields of a solar system are much larger than most other countries in the world.

A single solar panel here in South Africa is twice as effective as it would be
in Germany.”

We won two gold medals at the prestigious 2013 World-Spirits Awards for the Blaauwklippen 8 and 10 year old Brandies respectively.

We were also announced the “Group & Variety Winner” of our section of the competition.

Ninety participants from thirty nations took part in this year’s competition submitting 430 spirits for consideration. In total 405 medals were awarded – 25 double golds (7 of them Spirits of the Year), 277 gold medals 96 silvers and 7 bronze medals.

The 8 year old brandy sells for R293 and the 10 year old for R386 from our tasting centre. For more information about this competition, please visit:

We hosted our 6th Annual International Zinfandel Tasting at the Radisson Blu on the 7th of March.

A very interesting tasting, exploring the beauty of Australian Zinfandel and using the opportunity to introduce media to our soon to be released Zinfandel offerings, namely the refreshing Blaauwklippen White Zinfandel 2012, the juicy Red Zinfandel 2010, the Single Vineyard Blaauwklippen Zinfandel Reserve 2011 and last but not least the elegant highly concentrated Zinfandel Noble Late Harvest 2011.

Watch this space for release updates on these wines.
Market News
Firstly, a thank you from everybody at the market for your support in March. We had a fantastic month. The St. Patricks Day market of the 17th was a hit and we will be doing the same next year.

The market is a great opportunity to give back to the local community and raise awareness about important issues. Therefore you will see a few events taking place at the market to support these charities throughout April.

(Childhood Cancer Foundation)

On the 7th we are excited to welcome CHOC (Childhood Cancer Foundation) to the market. They will host a fun walk through the Vineyards of Blaauwklippen as a fund raiser. There will be a 1.3km, 3.5km and a 5km route. Entry is R50 for adults, R20 for children under 8 and R10 for dogs. Registration will take place at the CHOC stand at 10h00 and the walk will start from 11h00. Great spot prizes will be handed out throughout the day.

More info on the charity can be found at
The Goodness of Figs

We will be celebrating the goodness of figs on the 14th at our monthly ingredient day. This ingredient proved to be very popular last year and the traders conjured up some delicious combinations with figs.

Vineyard Doggy Walk

The Vineyard Doggy Walk will take place on the 21st. As the nights become cooler, our furry friends at the Helderberg Animal Welfare Society need to stay warm. If you have an old blanket at home, please bring it along on the day and donate it to the charity. The walk will start at 10h00 and the entry fee is R20 per person and dog or R10 per person only.

“Pink Day”

Join us on the 28th for our first “Pink Day”. Erica, the ladies residence from the University of Stellenbosch, will be hosting a fun walk and car wash in aid of Breast Cancer. The market will be kitted out in pink as well in order to raise awareness of Breast cancer.
