Since the arrival of the first European settlers on our shores, South Africa has become synonymous with good quality wines. And one of the earliest wine farms, nestled in a tiny valley just outside Stellenbosch, is Blaauwklippen Vineyards. Founded by Gerrit Jansz Visser in 1682, 6 years later the decision was made to plant vineyards in the farm’s fertile soil. So begins a long and storied history of Blaauwklippen Wines.
Blaauwklippen Vineyards cemented its place in the annals of South African wine history as one of the founding members of the Stellenbosch Wine Route in 1971, now one of the world’s most renowned wine routes. Another important marker in Blaauwklippen’s remarkable history was the introduction of Zinfandel grapes in 1977. This notoriously tricky varietal, once tamed and produced in 1980, quickly ensured that Blaauwklippen Vineyards became the foremost producer of Zinfandel in South Africa, a title it still holds proudly. A further feather in the proverbial cap was the establishment of the Blaauwklippen Blending Competition in 1984, still going strong today. It remains the only wine competition in SA aimed at consumers and not producers.
Of course you can’t mention Blaauwklippen without speaking on our myriad of products. Our philosophy has long been “The winemaker merely finishes what nature began.” Thus we developed a principle of minimal intervention in the process of wine making; we treat nature with the respect it deserves, as we believe that truly fine wines are created in the vineyard, not in the cellar. Everything from our main cultivars and our Reserve selection, to our brandy and aperitif is handled and treated with the utmost care for the most incredible results. As homage to our 333 years and our Zinfandel heritage, we recently released our Diva MCC 2013, the first Zinfandel MCC in Africa. Celebrations deserve a bottle of bubbly and we believe we’ve produced one of the best!
