It was a super sweet weekend as the Winelands Chocolate Festival descended upon Blaauwklippen Vineyards on August 20 and 21, with enough chocolate inspired products to keep even Willy Wonka and his Oompa-Loompas up to their eye-balls in chocolatey goodness! South African chocolate manufacturers, producers, and aficionados put on a show proving that SA is up there with the best of them when it comes to being creative with the cocoa bean.
Saturday was a sun soaked affair with, bright blue skies and gorgeous views of the Stellenbosch Mountains providing the perfect background for the Festival. Sunday proved to be less of a sun day, as it was punctuated by rain, however thanks to the well-tented areas with a variety of informative Chocolate Theatre Demos and yummy Tutored Tastings more than made up for it. The festival kicked off with a fashionable fashion show, providing even more refinement to this incredible occasion, with the ever-fancy cake competition showcasing some of the country’s very best bakers and their luscious and stunning works of art.
Of course it was chocolate that brought everyone to the event and it on that front it definitely did not disappoint, from the usual chocolate balls and truffles to the rather unusual strawberry chocolate bark and even chocolate and chilli pizza, to delight and excite the taste buds. There were delights from a plethora of small, local producers as well as the much more established brands like Lindt and Cassis. There was also hot chocolate, nougat and mouth-watering macaroons to ensure your sweet-tooth was sufficiently satiated.
If the sweetness started to take its toll and prove too much (as if!) there was a wide selection of savoury tarts, quiches, scones etc. to enjoy, perhaps in a picnic with friends, with a glass of Blaauwklippen wine in hand, whilst the kids enjoy running around on the wide-open lawns. Let’s not forget there was also a wide selection of Blaauwklippen wines which all paired perfectly with the delightful sweet treats on offer.
It was a weekend of delight and decadence as taste buds were treated to some of the very best chocolate in the world at a very welcoming Blaauwklippen Vineyards. If you happened to miss it, have no fear, as Blaauklwippen offers its very own Wine & Chocolate Pairing available for tasting every day, with a selection of the finest Belgian chocolates, meticulously paired with Blaauwklippen’s very best products, enabling you to continue that good feeling from the Chocolate Winelands Festival 2016.
